Should You Plaster or Plasterboard a Damaged Wall?
Short answer
A badly damaged wall can either be replastered traditionally with backing and finish coats, or dry lined with plasterboard fixed to the wall and then skimmed. Replastering keeps the wall solid and loses no room space; plasterboarding is often faster, drier and better at hiding very uneven surfaces.
When replastering makes sense
If the wall is fundamentally sound, the room is small, or you want to keep fixings solid and lose no floor area, rebuilding the plaster in the traditional way is usually the right call. It also suits older properties where the wall needs to breathe.
When boarding is better
Very uneven or heavily patched walls can be brought flat quickly by boarding over them. Dry lining introduces far less moisture into the room so it dries faster, and there is scope to add insulation behind the board where that is useful.
The trade-offs
Boarding takes a small amount of space off the room and can sound hollow when knocked. Any damp problem must be resolved before boarding, because covering damp over will make it worse rather than better.
