Cracks, holes, blown patches and water damage put right properly — repairing what needs repairing instead of replastering everything.
Plaster repair means cutting out failed or damaged plaster, dealing with whatever caused it, rebuilding the area and blending it into the surrounding surface. Most cracks, holes and blown patches can be repaired without replastering an entire room, although skimming the full wall afterwards often gives the most even result.
The process
Plaster rarely fails for no reason. We look for damp, leaks, movement or poor original bonding before touching the surface.
Loose and hollow plaster is removed back to a firm edge so the repair has something solid to key into.
The area is built back up in appropriate coats, with scrim or mesh bridging cracks and joints so they do not simply return.
The repair is finished flush and, where needed, the whole wall or ceiling is skimmed so nothing shows through the paint.
Common problems
Filler alone does not bridge a moving joint. Raking out, reinforcing and skimming gives a repair that stays put.
Where the original coat has separated from the wall behind, patching over it fails. It has to be cut out and rebuilt.
Stained, bulging ceilings need the leak fixed and the area dried before any plastering. We will say so rather than cover it up.
A repair that ignores the reason the plaster failed is a repair you will pay for twice. Damp coming through a solid wall, a slow leak behind a bathroom, salts in an old chimney breast or ongoing structural movement will all destroy new plaster just as quickly as they destroyed the old.
Where the cause sits outside plastering — a roof, a gutter, a pipe — we will tell you plainly so it can be sorted before we start.
A well-executed patch is invisible once painted in many cases. But where a wall has several repairs, or where the surrounding plaster is itself tired, skimming the whole surface afterwards is usually the better value option: it gives one continuous texture rather than a map of past repairs.

Period homes around Sutton, Carshalton and Wimbledon Village often have lime plaster or lath and plaster. These behave differently to modern gypsum, and a hard modern repair in a soft old wall can cause more cracking around it. We take the existing construction into account when deciding how to repair.
